IRIS is a new on-demand mobility service provided by the City of Independence, in partnership with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, zTrip, and RideCo.
Hours of Service:
The IRIS service will operate Monday-Saturday, 6:00am-6:00pm, excluding holidays. This coverage ensures that residents have access to reliable transportation at any time, accommodating varying schedules and needs.
Fares:
The fare structure for the IRIS service will feature a flat rate of $5.00 per person per trip.
There are three locations in Independence offered free of charge. Trips that either start or end at the following locations will be offered free of charge:
- Independence Transit Center, located at Noland and Truman Rd
- Centerpoint Hospital, located at 39th and Jackson Dr.
- Blue Ridge transfer point, located at 43rd Street
Riders can pay using a variety of methods, including credit/debit cards through the mobile app or cash. Customers may also select the offline payment option (cash or credit card) at the time of booking. When you board the vehicle, you will pay in cash or using credit card to the driver. Please have exact change, driver does not carry change.
What is IRIS?
IRIS is a flexible, user-friendly micro transit mobility service. The service utilizes an on-demand dynamic routing model which picks up and drops off riders in locations within close proximity of their request typically less than one quarter mile. Riders are picked up and dropped off in close proximity of their requested locations, ensuring convenient and accessible transportation throughout the city limits of Independence. This project is funded by the City of Independence and is contracting with KCATA. The Transportation Authority manages the on-demand service.
Where is IRIS available?
IRIS is available in the entire city limits of Independence.
Book A Ride
Mobile App: Download the IRIS app from RideCo in the Google Play store or the App Store. Anyone within the service area boundaries can summon a ride using the mobile app.
Simply enter in your destination address.
After you’re done booking, you’ll see the trip displayed in your upcoming trip list. The app will provide a window during which you’ll be picked up for your trip. You can also use the app to cancel a future ride.
Keep the app open to stay informed on your ride status. Customers using the app will get a notification when their ride is arriving at their pickup location. In addition, you have the option to get updates about your ride’s location via the IRIS app and SMS text notifications.

Your Ride:
The IRIS fleet will comprise five (5) vehicles, including a mix of four (4) sedans and one (1) wheelchair-accessible minivan. These vehicles will be modern, well-maintained, equipped with the latest safety features, and prominently branded with the IRIS logo. This carefully selected fleet ensures reliability, comfort, and efficiency in meeting the diverse transportation needs of the community.
During severe winter weather, Independence IRIS prioritizes the safety of our passengers and operators. Please be aware of the following:
Service Impacts
- Delays and Suspensions: Paratransit and Independence IRIS services may experience delays or suspensions when road conditions become unsafe. Service adjustments often begin when roads are ice-covered or when snowfall exceeds 3 inches.
- Reduced Service Areas: In extreme conditions, service may be limited to main roads and critical areas only.
- Notification Process: Service suspensions or delays will be communicated through the RideKC website, social media channels, and the RideKC app.
Path of Travel Requirements
- Clear Path Required: Customers must ensure that all paths of travel to and from the vehicle are cleared of snow and ice.
- Driver Assistance: Drivers are unable to assist with snow or ice clearing.
- Ride Refusal: Customers may be refused service if they cannot safely access the vehicle due to uncleared paths.
Notifications and Updates
- Stay Informed: Check the RideKC website, social media channels, or the RideKC app for real-time updates on service status.
- Phone Lines: Due to high call volumes during severe weather, phone lines may be busy. For faster assistance, use online tools for trip updates.
Safety First
- Allow Extra Time: Travel may take longer during inclement weather.
- Be Prepared: Dress warmly and ensure safe access to pickup and drop-off locations.
