Open Burn and Cooking Fire Policy and Regulations

Happy Labor Day weekend from all of us at the City of Independence!

The Truman Memorial Building, Palmer Center and National Frontier Trails Museum will be closed Friday, Sept. 4, due to SantaCaliGon Days. Most City facilities will also be closed Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

City Ordinance does not allow the burning of:

Household Waste
Vegetation or Yard Waste
Petroleum Products
Construction or Demolition Materials

City Ordinance allows the burning of:

No Permit Required:
- Residential, commercially manufactured outdoor fireplace or outdoor firepit under certain conditions
Permit & Inspection Required:
- Residential, homemade outdoor recreational burning under limited conditions
Permit Required:
- Ceremonial open burning or ceremonial cooking pit under limited conditions
