The Independence Champion of Non-Discrimination Award (ICON) is awarded by the Human Rights Commission to an individual and/or a local business or organization that demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and community well-being. The inaugural year of the award was 2025.

What We’re Looking For

Nominees may demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Promoting Social Justice & Equality: Standing up for human and civil rights and working to remove barriers that limit individuals and communities from thriving, focusing on equity, access, and rights for all.
  • Leadership & Volunteerism: Showing consistent leadership and generously giving time and service to the community—often beyond professional responsibilities.
  • Building Community & Connection: Bringing people together, improving understanding, and strengthening relationships across different groups.
  • Celebrating Diversity & Inclusion: Creating welcoming spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Nominations and questions may be submitted to the Independence Human Relations Commission through their staff liaison, John Mayfield, at jmayfield@indepmo.org, no later than Friday, April 3, 2026.
