Police Officer

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 21 years of age to be certified as a police officer
Must be a United States Citizen
Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent (college degree or college coursework in criminal justice preferred)
Possess/maintain a valid Missouri driver's license by date of hire and have a good driving record
Have no serious criminal record
Have an excellent work history and attendance record
Must not have been discharged from the military under dishonorable conditions
Residency in the City of Independence is not required

Eligible Candidates Must…

Pass a comprehensive written examination (The city conducts testing approximately twice a year)
Pass a pre-employment physical agility test (Given at the time of the written test)
Pass an oral interview
Pass a polygraph examination
Pass a psychological evaluation
Undergo an extensive background investigation and have the ability to render credible testimony in a court of law
Pass a medical physical and drug screen
Successfully complete a 13-week F.T.O. program and serve a 12-month probationary period after the appointment
Non-certified candidates are required to pass a state-certified police academy for a Class “A” P.O.S.T. certification for 600 hours
