Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age to be certified as a police officer
  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent (college degree or college coursework in criminal justice preferred)
  • Possess/maintain a valid Missouri driver's license by date of hire and have a good driving record
  • Have no serious criminal record
  • Have an excellent work history and attendance record
  • Must not have been discharged from the military under dishonorable conditions
  • Residency in the City of Independence is not required

Eligible Candidates Must…

  • Pass a comprehensive written examination (The city conducts testing approximately twice a year)
  • Pass a pre-employment physical agility test (Given at the time of the written test)
  • Pass an oral interview
  • Pass a polygraph examination
  • Pass a psychological evaluation
  • Undergo an extensive background investigation and have the ability to render credible testimony in a court of law
  • Pass a medical physical and drug screen
  • Successfully complete a 13-week F.T.O. program and serve a 12-month probationary period after the appointment
  • Non-certified candidates are required to pass a state-certified police academy for a Class “A” P.O.S.T. certification for 600 hours
