Independence City Council Adopts Fiscal Year 2026-27 Budget
The Independence City Council has adopted the City's Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget, approving a balanced financial plan that invests in public safety, neighborhood services, infrastructure, and organizational improvements while maintaining a focus on long-term fiscal sustainability.
The adopted budget totals $531.2 million, including a General Fund budget of $92.4 million, and takes effect July 1, 2026.
The budget aligns resources with the City's 2024-2027 Strategic Plan and reflects priorities identified through resident feedback, financial forecasting, and City Council direction.
"This budget reflects a practical approach to meeting today's needs while preparing for tomorrow's opportunities," said City Manager Troy Anderson. "We are investing in the services residents rely on every day, strengthening areas that have been under-resourced, and taking important steps to improve the City's long-term financial position. Our goal is to ensure Independence remains a safe, welcoming, and well-managed community for current and future generations."
Key investments in the Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget include:
- Additional resources for neighborhood and property maintenance efforts
- Funding to support animal shelter operations and increased abatements
- Investments in facilities, financial management, cybersecurity, customer service, and employee development
- Continued support for transportation services and cemetery maintenance
- Resources to strengthen economic development opportunities and leverage grants, partnerships, and sponsorships
The budget also reflects the City's commitment to balancing immediate service needs with long-term planning. While recent revenue growth has helped stabilize the General Fund, City leaders continue to focus on addressing structural financial challenges and building sustainable funding strategies for the future.
The Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget was developed through collaboration between City departments, City leadership, the City Council, and community members who provided feedback throughout the process.
