Independence Opens Nationwide Recruitment for Next Police Chief

The City of Independence has officially opened its nationwide recruitment for the next Chief of Police. Applications will be accepted through Monday, Aug. 17, 2026. 

The City has partnered with Strategic Government Resources (SGR), an executive recruitment firm specializing in local government leadership searches, to identify an experienced, service-oriented law enforcement executive prepared to lead the Independence Police Department into its next chapter. 

“Independence needs a Police Chief who will be visible, accountable and committed to supporting both our employees and our community,” City Manager Troy Anderson said. “We are looking for a servant leader who can strengthen the department’s culture, build trust, develop future leaders and provide a clear strategic direction for public safety in Independence. This is an important decision, and we are committed to conducting a thoughtful and inclusive search.” 

The Independence Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency with approximately 200 sworn officers and 95 civilian employees. Reporting directly to the City Manager, the Police Chief will provide strategic leadership for all department operations and oversee budgeting, policy development, personnel and resource management. 

The City is seeking a leader who will advance accountability, transparency and organizational excellence while strengthening community policing initiatives and addressing emerging public safety challenges. The successful candidate will also be expected to prioritize employee development, recruitment and retention, modernization and strong relationships with employees, elected officials and residents. 

The position offers an annual salary of $150,000 to $180,000, depending on experience and qualifications. 

Community engagement will be an important part of the selection process. Once finalists are identified, the City plans to host a public open house where residents, community leaders, stakeholders, members of the media and other interested parties will have an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask questions and provide feedback. 

Community input will be considered as the City works to identify the right leader to guide the Independence Police Department into its next chapter. 

Interim Police Chief Doug Brinkley will continue leading the department throughout the recruitment and selection process.
