Independence Police Chief Resigns; City to Begin Search for Interim Chief
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The City of Independence announced Police Chief Adam Dustman has resigned from his position, effective Friday, August 15, 2025.
During his tenure, Chief Dustman led the department through a period of significant progress and modernization. Under his leadership, the Independence Police Department secured new funding to enhance operations, filled longstanding vacancies to strengthen staffing levels, and acquired updated equipment to better serve residents. Chief Dustman also oversaw the development of new facilities, improving both officer readiness and community engagement.
“Chief Dustman’s leadership has brought important advancements to the department, and we are grateful for his service to the City of Independence,” said City Manager Zach Walker. “His commitment to supporting our officers and improving public safety will have a lasting impact.”
To ensure continuity of leadership, the City has engaged Strategic Government Resources (SGR) to assist with a nationwide search for an interim Chief of Police. Throughout this process, the City Manager’s Office will work closely with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and members of the Police Department’s command staff to identify a strong interim leader who can continue the department’s mission and maintain community trust.
Deputy Chief Jason Petersen will continue to lead the department until this interim selection process is completed.
