New Theatre – Jersey Boys, Wednesday, 5/14/2025 Time: 10:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Enjoy a lunch buffet followed by the hit musical Jersey Boys. This award-winning musical tells the rags-to-riches story of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi. Please note that our seats for this show are on the left side of the theatre. Registration opens on 3-13-25 This trip is full. Please call to be added to the waitlist.

Jamesport, MO, Thursday, 5/22/2025 Time: 7:45 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Step back in time and learn about Jamesport’s history and Amish culture. Sites include an Amish home, farm, bakery, shops, and more. After the tour you’ll be treated to an included lunch buffet at Gingrich Dutch Pantry. Following lunch, you will have time to browse the downtown shops before returning to Independence. This trip is full. Please call to be added to the waitlist.

Aging Mastery Program (AMP) Tuesdays, April 22 - June 24 from 9:45 - 11:15 a.m.

Created by the National Council on Aging, the Aging Mastery Program (AMP) offers a comprehensive and fun approach to living that celebrates the gift of longevity. The 10-week program uses goal setting, daily practices, professional speakers, peer support, and incentives to help you create your own personal playbook for aging well. Register by April 8, 2025. Free for adults 60 and over. $75 fee for adults under 60. Space is limited!

Preventing Child Sexual Assault Wednesday, 4/2 at 10:30 a.m.

Attend MOCSA's trauma-informed educational session on how to recognize & prevent child sexual assault so we can keep the kids we care about safe.

How Nutrition Changes as You Age Tuesday, 4/8 at 10:30 a.m.

Learn how to keep your body well-nourished as you age through this educational presentation led by Humana.

Treasures from the Attic Wednesday, 4/9 at 10:45 a.m.

Bring a special item from home and share your story about the item with others.

Spring Swap Friday, 4/11 at 12:15 p.m.

Have any gently used items that you don't need: books, knickknacks, cookware, or other odds and ends? Bring them to the Palmer Center to swap for something you may need. Leave the rest to be donated!

Earth Day Trivia Tuesday, 4/15 at 10:30 a.m.

Earth Day is April 22nd. To get us ready, we'll test our knowledge with an Earth Day Trivia contest.

Easter Egg Hunt Friday, 4/18 at 10:30 a.m.

Trip Tips & Travel Talks Monday, 4/21 at 12:15 p.m.

Do you have a favorite travel hack? Or photos of a trip you would love to share? Join us for our Trip Tips and Travel Talks and share with the group. Please share your trips' photos (hardcopy or electronic) with Jo by April 16 if you'd like them included in the talk.

Let’s Talk About the Forest Thursday, 4/24 at 12:30 p.m.

An expert Naturalist from George Owens will teach us about forest ecosystems: the animals, plants, and trees. We will discuss this habitat in detail starting with how soils hold plants in the ground, what kinds of animals prefer the forest, and how trees create competition with each other.

Elvis Wednesday, 4/30 at 10:45 a.m.

We're All Shook Up with excitement to have our very own Elvis Tribute Show.

18+ Saturday Court Reservation Available on Saturdays, 9:00—10:00 a.m., 10:15—11:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m.—12:30 p.m.

$25 per court reservation fee per 1 hour session. Payment due at time of reservation. Reservations can be made in person, or by calling 816-325-6200. Reservations may be made up to 4 weeks in advance and are required by the Wednesday before. Nets provided. Players bring their own paddles and balls.

Low Vision Resources

If you experience problems with low vision, plan a visit to utilize or perhaps borrow some of our equipment: a variety of magnifiers, check writing guides, and 20/20 pens. Make an appointment to see if we can help meet your needs. A Merlin—a full color auto focus video magnifier system is available for use in the library. Co-sponsored with MO Rehab Services for the Blind. Information on the Wolfner Library and KU’s Audio Reader program are also available

Wellness Check Phone Calls

Staff members or volunteers make regular phone calls to seniors in the community to check in and stay in touch. If you would like to be added to the phone call list and receive calls, contact the Palmer Center at 816-325-6200.

RideKC Freedom

Older adult transportation and ADA paratransit is available for qualified individuals. It is curb-to-curb transportation that operates Monday-Saturday within the city limits of Independence. Please call RideKC to request an application—816-461-IBUS (4287).

United Way 211

United Way 211 is a free referral line that connects people with the community resources and assistance programs they need. The 211-phone line is answered 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. For assistance, visit 211kc.org or dial 211.
