The City of Independence supports responsible waste disposal and recycling. While the City does not provide residential trash service, we offer a variety of waste disposal options, community cleanup events, and partner with local organizations to help residents keep Independence clean.

Residential Trash

The City does not provide Residential Trash Service. Please contact a private trash hauler for weekly trash services.

The City of Independence offers a variety of trash collection events throughout the year.


Drop-Off Depot

The Drop-Off Depot is a great place to drop off a variety of materials and trash. There is a cost to drop off most materials, and some are free to drop off.

The Drop-Off Depot is held on the second Saturday of each month between April and October.

Location:

875 S. Vista Ave, Independence, MO 64056
1 mile east of M-291 on Truman Road, north of Vista Avenue

Hours & Dates of Depots:

  • 8 AM - 3 PM | April - October, the second Saturday of each month.

General Requirements:

  • Independence Residents only. 
    • Bring a valid driver's license or a recent utility bill.
  • Residential only.
    • No commercial waste is allowed.

Payment Methods:

  • Cash or local check only.
    • No credit cards, debit cards, or coins are accepted.
  • MO State Statute says loads must be tarped or secured so that no part of the load can fall from the vehicle.

Prices at the Drop-off Depot

Prices are based on the type of vehicle used, not the contents of the load (except tires and appliances). The same prices apply to both trash and brush.

General: Furniture, mattresses & box springs, carpet, plumbing fixtures, sheetrock, windows, shingles, fencing, landscape timbers, bricks, paving stones, tires, etc.

Brush: limbs, firewood, bushes & stumps.  No bagged leaves, grass, or yard waste.

Appliances: Refrigerators, freezers, stoves, dishwashers, hot water heaters, washers, dryers, etc. Fluids do not need to be drained but appliance must be empty of contents.
Lawnmowers ALL fluids must be drained
Batteries: Auto, boat, lawnmower, motorcycle.

Televisions, computer monitors, paint, cleaners, drain openers, pool chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, antifreeze, gasoline gas tanks, sealed drums.


Household Hazardous Waste

The Municipal Services Department typically holds a Household Hazardous Waste mobile collection event in the spring each year. This event is geared toward the disposal of materials not typically accepted at the Drop Off Depot. Call (816) 325-7727 for information.

Independence T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R. stands for Together Opportunities Grow Everyone To Help Empower Resiliency. The program is a partnership among the City of Independence, the Community Services League (CSL), and MoDOT, focusing on addressing two key community priorities: assisting residents experiencing unstable housing and promoting community beautification. 

Through Independence T.O.G.E.T.H.E.R., residents who are unhoused or experiencing unstable housing are paid for their work cleaning up roadside litter along main streets in Independence.
