Private Sewer Rates

Surcharge for Wastewaters of Excessive Strength

For nondomestic users who are subject to a surcharge for wastewaters of excessive strength pursuant to Section 7.07.011 of the City Code, the following rates per pound over set limits shall apply:

Outside City Rates*

Rates for all sanitary sewer customers whose property is situated outside the City limits shall be 1.5 times the appropriate base rate for private sewers. These rates shall apply to all owners and occupants of each lot, parcel of real estate or building which is connected to the City of Independence sanitary sewer system or which discharges wastewater of any type, either directly or indirectly into the wastewater treatment system, but who are situated outside of the City limits. These charges shall not be applicable where arrangements for sanitary sewer service and sewer service charges are established by existing or future intergovernmental contracts approved by the City Council.

* Social Security Discount

There shall be a $1/month discount for residential customers receiving Social Security benefit payments, or evidence of other similar retirement benefits at age 62 or above, and who have sewer usage of 1, 2, 3, or 4 hundred cubic feet (ccf) per month.

The outside City residential customer shall also be eligible for this discount after the 1.5 factor has been applied to the residential private sewer rate.

It shall be the responsibility of the customer to provide proof of qualification for such benefits.
